  • Happy Birthday 9-1-1

On February 16, 1968, in Haleyville, Alabama, the first 9-1-1 call was made by Alabama Speaker of the House Rankin Fite and answered by US Representative Tom Bevill. The technology of 9-1-1 has dramatically changed since that day when AT&T met back in November of 1967 with the FCC to try and find a way to have one universal emergency number to be used in the United States.

WE have come a long way since Huntsville in so many ways, but we are still the same in other ways. We could remind our representatives of that day long ago when they were on the cusp of history, yet we still ask for reclassification assistance. Fifty-six years is not that long, but it may seem like a lifetime if it takes us 56 years to be reclassified. Let this birthday have as much meaning this year as it did in 1968 - Let us make our own history!

Happy Birthday, 9-1-1, with many more yet to come!
