As a chapter, and an industry we have endured pressures over the past 8-10 months that none of us would have ever been able to predict. We have seen our positions change, how we process calls has changed, many are asking medical questions on every call, and this is all due to COVID19. Typically, as Dispatchers we are subject to very little danger as we work to help our citizens and first responders through the thousands of emergencies, we dispatch every year. Aside from occasionally working as Incident Dispatchers, we sit in our climate-controlled environments, performing the vital work we do.
This year is different, this virus, a virus that we cannot see, taste, touch or smell has penetrated our fortified, secure communications centers, and worse our homes. As a Chapter we have lost members, and as an industry we have lost public safety telecommunicators to the COVID19 virus. Aside from losing those in our midst, all of us have been impacted in other ways, whether it is separating ourselves into different rooms to do our jobs, working remotely, having to wear masks at work, or even in many cases being told by our supervisors to quarantine because of a potential exposure, or positive diagnoses among our team members.
As a chapter and association, we have been unable to come together for training, meetings, conferences, and the networking that is so important to our profession. This has impacted all of us in many ways, for some their jobs have stayed the same, just busier, and for others their jobs and associated responsibilities have grown exponentially.
As 2020 ends, I wanted to take a moment and thank you, the public safety telecommunicators of the Atlantic Chapter for the vital work you do every day, and thank you for overcoming the challenges that 2020 has brought to us this year.
We look forward to the 2021 International Conference in San Antonio, and the Chapter Conference to be held in Stowe Vermont.
On behalf of myself, and the Atlantic Chapter of APCO Executive Board we want to thank those of you who will be working the holidays, so others may be off, and we all want to wish each of you and your families a safe, healthy, and happy holidays, and a Happy New Year. We all join together, in hoping and praying that 2021 will be a better year for everyone, our centers, our departments, the citizens we serve.
